I was 49 then, and had spent the previous 25 years as a teacher. A lightning bolt hit me with the inspiration to start a new work life from scratch--I had a hankering to be a beginner, as well as to do work that I thought would do more direct good. So here I am on the 3rd of July, 2005, 50 years old, working on homework for my classes instead of planning for retirement. Good idea?
